Choosing a domain name
The Importance of Domain Names
Even if you are not planning to set up a web site yet, we strongly advise you register your domain name. Simply, if you don't register your name, maybe someone else will. By getting your name registered, you can prevent anyone else, accidentally or otherwise, from using your brand name on the Internet.
Choosing the Right Name
A FQDN is comprised of a name of your choice followed by a TLD which indicates what you are and where you operate. For example, our FQDN is 'nildram.net'. 'nildram' because that is our company name and '.net' indicates that we are an Internet Service Provider. Typically, a company will choose from 'co.uk', UK company, or '.com', an International or USA-based company.
Finally you can add any number of 'sub-domains', which prefix the FQDN. A Subdomain is a logical subdivision of a fully qualified domain name. We can provide subdomains for a FQDN that you have already registered.
E.g. customer login: a person has a standard e-mail address of anything@mycompany.co.uk, in addition to this, if they registered the Subdomain name of 'myhouse', they would also receive mail sent to anything@myhouse.mycompany.co.uk.
Note: We provide 1 free subdomain with every Nildram Dial-Up Account (yourchoice.nildram.co.uk).
When choosing a name, remember that you may have to shorten or abbreviate your full company name in order to make it easy to understand. Also, consider registering more than one TLD, like registering both '.co.uk' and '.com', to avoid others registering it. Some companies also register variations, such as www.bt.com and www.british-telecom.com.
