ADSL
Getting Started
Before you attempt to connect to your ADSL you must first make sure the Microfilters and cabling are setup correctly (see Microfilter support section under hardware for more details).
Once the cabling is correct then its time to start configuring your hardware.
Note: If you are using a Nildram supplied modem or router to connect then either consult the welcome letter or visit our hardware section on the support site for more details.
Due to the wide variety of available ADSL equipment we are unable give precise details on how to connect using routers or modem that have not been supplied by Nildram Ltd. Below is a guide to the basic principle of setting up a modem or router to connect to ADSL.
Should you have a problem, we strongly recommend you consult your equipment manual or modem provider first for the full details on how to get connected.
ADSL Router
- Plug the Microfilter directly in to your phone socket. You can then connect the router to the Microfilter using an RJ11 cable (This will have been provided with your router).
- Plug your PC or MAC into your router using a RJ45 network cable, starting with a single PC connected into the router. Please make sure you are able to connect before you start adding hubs etc.
If using a single port router then you should use a crossover RJ45 cable.
If using a multi-port router then a patch/straight through cable is needed.
- Configure your PC/MAC network card to suit the configuration of the router. This will vary depending on the router make/model, please consult the router manual on setting up the network card. Some routers will use DHCP as default, which might not be necessary, see the section on DHCP and consult the router manual.
- Log into your router, most ADSL routers have a HTTP interface built in which will allow you to connect via a web browser. To do this, open a web browser and enter the IP address of your router in the address bar e.g. http://192.168.1.1
Dependant on the make of router, it may ask you to the router manual for the default username and password.
- Once you are in the router configuration pages you will need to refer to the manual or speak to the router provider to advise which menu to select. Once the correct menu has been selected, you will need to work through the settings detailed on your 'Welcome Letter'. Please ensure that you are using the full domain for your ADSL e.g. 'example@gotadsl.co.uk' or 'example@dslsurf500.xdsl'.
Save the configuration to update the router settings and to connect to Nildram, the router may reboot itself at this stage.
NAT will need to be disabled in the router configuration should you have a block of IP addresses form Nildram Ltd. If you only have a single IP address, NAT will need to be enabled.
ADSL Modem
- If using a USB modem, install the drivers before plugging in the modem (this does not apply to Conexant models). Internal modems will need to be installed in the PC prior to installing the drivers.
- Insert the driver CD that comes with the modem. If it does not run automatically, go to 'My Computer' and double click on the CD icon.
- Follow the on-screen instructions ensuring the settings are entered as detailed in your welcome letter e.g. VPI & VCI (see technical details support section for more information).
- Plug in the modem if prompted, otherwise allow the driver to finish installing and then reboot.
- Plug in the modem (if not done in step 4) and finish the installation.
- If the modem has created a dial-up connection, double click on it and enter the login name and password as detailed on your welcome letter. Please ensure that you are using the full domain for your ADSL e.g. 'example@gotadsl.co.uk' or 'example@dslsurf500.xdsl'.
If the modem did not create a connection, one will have to be created manually through dial-up networking, making sure the new modem created is selected.
XP users will have the option of a broadband connection DO NOT USE THIS, simply select "connect using a dialup modem" and continue as normal
Please refer to the modem manual if it asks for a number to dial, typically the number will be 0, 38 or 000000.
