Getting Started

How to create/edit records

In order to get your website/e-mail working, records will need to be setup to point parts of your domain such as "www" to servers. Nildram will be happy to add/modify any records for you should you require this.

Simply e-mail your request to hostmaster@nildram.net stating your name, account number, domain name and the record you want added/changed.

Types of Record

NS
Name Server, only complete if you wish another party to host your domain on their DNS. Please note this is not a domain transfer and Nildram will continue to charge a maintenance fee to cover WHOIS database maintenance and domain renewal.
Pointer
This is a sub-domain of the domain name e.g. www.domain.co.uk or mail.domain.com. You need to specify either a CNAME or A record for each sub-domain.
MX
Mail transfer record for directing mail across the Internet. If SMTP, please also advise the A record.
MX Value
Priority of record, the lower the denomination the higher the priority.
A
This is the record for translating a domain name to an IP address.
CNAME
An alias name for an A record. This is mainly used if the same IP address is published on a number of DNS records i.e. mail server handing mail for more than one domain or a web server.
PTR
Reverse DNS (rDNS) is a method of translating an IP address to a domain name. One of the applications for rDNS is as a spam filter, if a spammer uses an invalid IP address (one that doesn't resolve to the domain name) the mail server will treat the message as spam and block it.
TTL
This is the time any changes to your DNS record will take to update around the Internet. The default setting is 24 hours. Remember any change to the TTL record will take 24 hours to update prior to the pointer record being changed.

We aim to respond to your change request within 48 hours (excluding weekends) and the change itself will take 24 hours to propagate around the internet.

If necessary, to minimise the impact to your domain service, we are happy to schedule a time with you to make the change(s). Changes can be scheduled for anytime between 9.00 am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday, please provide us with at least 48 hours notice if a scheduled change is required.

Creating Email Addresses at your own Domain

With your DSL mail account, it is possible to create addresses ending with your own domain name. Requirements for this are as follows:

  • A DSL account with spare email addresses available.
  • A domain held by yourself.
  • Contact via phone / email with the Nildram Customer Support desk.
  • Contact with the Hostmaster of your domain (or use of its control panel if provided).

Please follow the steps below for successful completion of this process:

  1. Contact support and request that the domain you own is associated with your DSL mail account.
  2. Next, you will need to make modifications to the MX records of your domain to point towards the relevant Nildram mail servers. (This can be done either by requesting the changes with your hostmaster, or adding them yourself if your domain is provided with a control panel. The MX records are:
    • a.mx.nildram.net
    • b.mx.nildram.net
  3. Once this has been completed, you can now start adding the addresses you require to your account. To do this, first log into My Controls

Once logged in using your standard ADSL username and password, click on the 'dslMail' button, which will bring up a screen displaying the mail accounts which you currently have configured.

To create a new mail box, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the orange 'Add Mailbox' button.

The screen which this will bring up allows you to enter the address you wish, using the drop down menu to select your domain name. The procedure is then finalised by clicking on the 'Add Mailbox' button.
