Microfilter

Troubleshooting

Mis-configured microfilter can cause numerous problems with the ADSL line and telephony devices. Problems with the ADSL line include no synchronisation, intermittent disconnections and, in some cases, slow download speeds. Problems with the PSTN (Telephone) devices include no dial-tone, a noisy/crackling Line and high-pitched interference caused by the ADSL signal.

If you experience any of these problems, the microfilters need to be eliminated from being the problem. Even though you may not have changed the configuration of the microfilters, some brands have still been known to fail for apparently no reason, and cause the symptoms above.

I get noise on my phone line

Disconnect everything from the phone line including the ADSL and try the phone without the microfilter. If you're still getting noise then you should report the fault to BT. IF there's only noise once the microfilter is in place then it may be faulty so replace it.

My ADSL disconnects when the phone rings

This usually occurs when the microfilters are incorrectly setup, most commonly this is due to not having a microfilters on every extension point.
