Applies To Nildram supplied THOMSON SpeedTouch 330 ADSL USB modem.
This guide will help you install and configure your Nildram ADSL USB Modem on a Windows PC, for more in depth details or installation on a Mac please refer to the user guide found on the supplied CD. Please note that this modem is not supported on Intel based Apple Macs.
For Nildram supplied ADSL USB modem only
If you have purchased your own modem or router, please refer to the manufacturer's instructions. Please note due to the wide range of modems and routers on sale we cannot provide technical support for 3rd party devices. In the event of a problem, please contact the manufacturer or supplier.
Step 1: Get everything you need
Make sure you have:
- Your Nildram ADSL USB Modem
- Your Welcome Pack
- Access to a PC near to the BT master socket
Don't forget to check your activation date!
Step 2: Check your system requirements
Your PC must be running either Windows 98SE, 2000, ME or XP (including XP64 bit), Mac OS 8.6, 9.0 & 10.1-10.4; Linux. (Intel Mac's not supported)
- You will need one free USB port available
- If you are a Mac user, please refer to the instructions included on the supplied SpeedTouch CD for connecting your computer to the modem
What's USB?
USB (Universal Systems Bus) is a technology for connecting peripherals to a computer. Most computers come with at least two ports located at the back of the machine next to the keyboard and mouse ports. Some computers (such as iMac) have them on the monitor.
If you do not have a spare USB port Purchase an inexpensive USB Hub from a technology store. These convert single ports into multiple ones. Using hubs, a single port can handle up 128 devices!
Step 3: Check the box contents
In, or supplied with, the ADSL USB Modem box you should find the following:
- One SpeedTouch 330
- 2m ADSL Phone Cable (black, RJ11)
- SpeedTouch Setup CD
- Two ADSL Microfilter's
- Quick Start Guide
The modem does not require any external power source.
If any of the above is missing, please contact Nildram on 0870 094 6000 before proceeding further.
Step 4: Install the Microfilter's
In order for your ADSL line to function correctly, every phone socket in use will need a Microfilter installed.
Anything that uses the phone line, such as phones, fax machines or set-top boxes (such as Sky Digital) will need a Microfilter installed on the socket it connects to. It's ok to use Y-adaptors after the filter.
Failure to install Microfilter's will stop your phone from working correctly.
We have supplied two Microfilter's with your modem. We can supply additional Microfilter's at low cost if required. Please call 08701 608 602 for more details.
To install, remove the phone or device currently plugged into the phone socket and plug in the Microfilter. Reconnect the device to the Microfilter phone socket. Repeat this for every socket in use.
Once installed, you can connect your phone to the socket on the Microfilter. You can make and receive phone calls at any time, regardless of whether ADSL is being used or not.
Note: Microfilter's are not required for any additional phone lines that are not ADSL-enabled.
Step 5: Install the driver software
Note: Do not connect the modem to your computer before installing the software.
Insert the supplied SpeedTouch setup CD in your CD-ROM drive. After a few seconds the screen below should appear. If the screen does not appear, select 'My Computer', then your CD-ROM drive (normally drive D) and double-click 'setup.exe'.
Select 'SpeedTouch USB/330 Software' from the main menu.
On the next screen select "Install driver Software"
You will now be presented with the option of which type of driver to install. Choose the correct option depending on the attainable speed of your ADSL connection.
Note: Installing the "above 4Meg" driver on ADSL circuits that are slower than 4Meg will not increase the attainable throughput and could result in a less stable connection.
Continue through the following option screens and then the driver installation process will commence. During this time some screens may momentarily appear. Do not interrupt the process until you are prompted to plug in your modem.
When this prompt shown on the right appears, you are ready to install the modem.
Step 6: Connect the ADSL USB modem
The back panel of your modem has one port for the ADSL phone cable to connect to.
Reboot your PC if you were required to do so in Step 5 and log in if necessary.
- Close any Windows applications you may be running.
- Connect the modem to your ADSL line using the supplied cable via one of the Microfilter's. The cable has identical plugs at both ends.
- Plug the USB cable into your computer, these only fit one way around; never force them.
After a few seconds, you will see the modem being detected. Windows XP users will see a message similar to this one:
Some dialog screens may momentarily appear as final configuration is completed. Please do not interrupt this process, which may take a few minutes.
Step 8: Connect to the Internet
At last, the good bit!
Before connecting, check your ADSL is operational by looking at the DSL icon in the system tray. It should show two green 'computers'.
The installation process will have created a desktop shortcut called 'Speedtouch connection'. Double-click the icon. A connection screen will appear:
Enter your username and password as provided to you by Nildram.
If you see a slightly different screen with a 'Phone number' field, leave this blank.
Click 'Connect'.
The modem will now attempt to log onto the Internet.
You can see the connection progress by selecting, Connection -> 'Toggle Status Window'
After a few seconds, the Internet connection will be established. Windows XP users will see a notification box.
Open up your web browser, enter 'www.nildram.net' in the location bar and press enter. You will now see the Nildram homepage.
You can check the status of your connection at any time by double-clicking on the 'DSL' system tray icon.
Welcome to the Internet!
