Going Wireless...
There aren't many technological developments which really can change your life, but wireless networking is one of them.
Wireless networking is allowing more and more people the freedom to use their computers whenever and wherever they like whilst still enjoying a fast Internet connection anywhere in the house or office. You can now choose where you want to work or play, using the internet is no longer restricted to the spare room or home office.
A Wireless network is perfect for homes with more than one desktop or laptop computer that need to connect to the Internet, and is a quick and easy way to share your Internet connection. You can share your files with other computers on your network such as mp3's, photographs, spreadsheets, business documents and more. You'll even be able to open up a webcam or DVD and send the feedback to other computers on your network.
The possibilities are endless, imagine being able to tune into your favourite Internet radio station in the bedroom or searching online for a recipe in the kitchen or even checking your email in the garden.
Wireless networks offer the following advantages:
- Increased Mobility - roam around within the wirless network without getting disconnected
- Quick and Easy Installation - a wireless system can eliminate the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings.
- Wider Reach of the network - the network can be extended to places which can not be wired
- Share Equipment – printers, fax machines, scanners will all of your computers
- Save Capital Expenditure - alleviate pressure for more phone lines & equipment.
- Scalability - this system grows with your needs
Going wireless is easy, firstly you'll need a wireless broadband modem/router connected to the telephone line. This connects to the internet and then beams data packets via low-powered radio signals to special cards (wireless adapters) installed in every computer in the house (note: laptops already have these installed).
This means not only that all the machines are invisibly networked with one another (making it easy to move files, do back-ups etc) but also that any computer in the house can be on the net without having to be tethered.
If you are out and about it's simple: you boot up your wireless-enabled laptop; it detects the local network; you pay a small fee by credit card; and bingo! you have a broadband connection for the day.
